Just a quick idea here to get things started:
If your business is targeting a local or regional market - like most of my clients who work within the northern New Jersey and metro New York area - your website needs to reflect that. Not only will your site visitors be happy to quickly know that your business can serve them (or that you cannot so they can move on), you have a much greater chance of being found in the search engines.
People might start their search looking for "crane rentals," but they'll quickly refine their search by adding a geographical marker (e.g., "crane rentals nj") after realizing the initial search results are far too broad. If your website properly reflects that you serve NJ, you have a much greater chance of being found when the prospect refines their search.
There are a number of things to consider with this approach - for example, whether your prospects are more likely to enter "ny" or "nyc" or "new york" into their search string. However, properly focusing the content of your website on your targeted geography is likely to yield better results for your website overall.
