Claim Your Local Business Listings Now!

Joe P. - Monday, March 08, 2010
Most likely, Google has a record of your company in their local listings.  Try searching in Google for your company name along with your town and state (e.g., schaible's plumbing & heating hampton, nj).  If you see your listing and you haven't claimed it yet, you need to take action.  If you aren't listed at all, you need to request that you be added.

You can do this at Google's business center here:
google.com/local/add

Here is a nice article explaining why you should do this and what you should focus on in your Google Listing.

The same thing goes with Yahoo! and Bing and your local business listings there.

Yahoo!'s business center for free listings is here:
http://listings.local.yahoo.com/basic.php

Bing's is here but they're currently fixing some problems with their system:
https://ssl.bing.com/listings/ListingCenter.aspx

Here is an article on updating your Bing local business listing.

There are a number of critical reasons to get control of your local business listings online, which we'll talk about here soon.  In the meantime, go out and claim your listings (and be sure to keep your account information in your records somewhere so you can make updates in the future).

Targeting a Specific Geography Online

Joe P. - Friday, September 18, 2009
Just a quick idea here to get things started:

If your business is targeting a local or regional market - like most of my clients who work within the northern New Jersey and metro New York area - your website needs to reflect that.  Not only will your site visitors be happy to quickly know that your business can serve them (or that you cannot so they can move on), you have a much greater chance of being found in the search engines.

People might start their search looking for "crane rentals," but they'll quickly refine their search by adding a geographical marker (e.g., "crane rentals nj") after realizing the initial search results are far too broad.  If your website properly reflects that you serve NJ, you have a much greater chance of being found when the prospect refines their search.

There are a number of things to consider with this approach - for example, whether your prospects are more likely to enter "ny" or "nyc" or "new york" into their search string.  However, properly focusing the content of your website on your targeted geography is likely to yield better results for your website overall.

Feel free to give us a call at 973-826-1513 to find out how we can help you with this.
